As per Alex Murdaugh's obituary, his father died on June 10, 2021, just three days after the tragic demise of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul.

Similar to Alex, Randolph Murdaugh III also worked in the legal field, although it is uncertain if he conducted himself within the bounds of the law. After finishing law school in 1964, Randolph went back to Hampton, South Carolina, and began working at his father's law firm. He also served as an Assistant Solicitor for the 14th Circuit. Remarkably, for 87 years, a male member of the Murdaugh family held that same position. However, as with many dynasties, such extensive power can lead to corruption.

The Greenville News reports that a great deal transpired during those 87 years:

"Within that span, Murdaugh's forefathers have participated in various capacities in the justice system. They've been implicated in federal conspiracy cases and multiple criminal cases concerning unethical bankers in the intriguing but contentious legal dynasty that underpins present-day circumstances."

As Lord Acton famously stated, "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." However, what about Murdaugh's mother, who, of course, is not associated with this heritage of questionable ethics?

Regrettably, Libby Murdaugh is afflicted with dementia, and she played a minor role in the evening when Alex Murdaugh's wife and son were killed.

Soon after the presumed time of Maggie and Paul's murders (around 9 p.m.), Murdaugh visited his mother's residence where he conversed with her caregiver, Mushelle "Shelley" Smith. According to Smith's testimony, Murdaugh's visit lasted no more than 20 minutes, and stopping by at that hour was "uncommon" for him. Smith further testified that Murdaugh requested her to state that he was present for "30 to 40 minutes" in exchange for an extravagant wedding gift.

Smith's testimony contained a highly incriminating detail, wherein she mentioned Murdaugh's return to his mother's residence early in the morning. During that visit, Murdaugh brought along an item she referred to as a "blue tarp," which he left on a chair in his mother's room.

During September 2021, SLED investigators conducted a search warrant at the residence. During the search, they discovered a blue tarp stored in an upstairs bedroom closet alongside some dishes. Furthermore, a blue raincoat was also found in a coat closet. Subsequently, both items underwent testing, and the blue raincoat was confirmed to have tested positive for gunshot residue.

During cross-examination, Smith persisted in claiming that Murdaugh brought in a blue tarp rather than a raincoat.
